A trip to the spa is often viewed as a fun, luxury trip, however the benefits that can be gained from a spa session can actually do wonders for your physical health and mental well-being.

Modern day life can be pretty stressful – the pressures of work, keeping up a social life and family life, it can be a lot to take and some people can become affected by this. A spa trip offers an escape to relax and de-stress. It doesn’t even have to be an all day event- a spa trip can be as short as an hour! Spas are much more accessible than they once were, and they provide a great way to wind down and improve your mood.

To help you de-stress, most spas will offer massages which work wonders in releasing the tension you may be carrying – the best masseurs will even work out hidden tension you didn’t know you had! A massage will also help to soothe and relieve you of any aches and pains you may be suffering.

Any good spa will have plenty of water and heat-based facilities. A spa pool is ideal if you just want to sit back and relax. Steam rooms and saunas are beneficial to your skin, as the heat will cleanse your body of unwanted toxins and leave you feeling fresh and relaxed. A steam room is also great if you have congested breathing, as the steam can help to relieve the pressure in your lungs and improve your breathing.

Do you struggle to get to sleep? Saunas may be able to help. The heat soothes nerve endings, relaxes muscles and can help to relieve aches and pain. Feel-good endorphins are released which can help you finally enjoy a good night of sleep!

As well as completely relaxing you, a spa trip has the potential to help you lose weight and tone your body. A twenty minute sauna session can burn up to 500 calories! Although you must always use a sauna carefully. Don’t force yourself to stay in that long if you don’t feel right, give yourself a break and rehydrate yourself. It may not sound the most pleasant, but following a heat treatment, the best thing you can do for your skin is to apply ice cold water straight away, as this will help to tone up your skin and boost your immune system. And once you’re over the initial shock of the cold, you’ll feel extremely refreshed!
