Everyone needs to be able to relax at some point, and a popular route to relaxation is with a visit to a sauna. Many saunas, including The Stable in London, will offer their visitors access to a number of heat and wet facilities such as a sauna, a steam room and a spa pool. We’re going to look a some things you should know before your visit to ensure you get the most from your stay.
Preparation is key to get the most from a sauna a visit and the best way you can prepare is by being mindful of what you put into your body. If possible, avoid alcohol as it can actually be unsafe to use heat and wet facilities when under the influence. It can cause dehydration and feelings of lightheadedness. Eat light meals before you go as well as this will keep you from feeling bloated and heavy – no one wants to feel uncomfortable when spending a few hours in a towel!
You may have decided to treat yourself to the ultimate luxury of a massage, so of course you want to feel as best prepared as possible. Opt for a warm shower before hand – this will start to loosen up and relax your muscles you can get the most benefit from your massage. Also, depending on your grooming routine, don’t go with freshly shaved/waxed skin. The heat and the oils used in spas and saunas can irritate the skin and leave you with not so attractive red blotches.
Keep hydrated before and during your visit. You’re going to sweat a lot in the sauna, so make sure you replace lost water regularly. Ideally aim for one cup of water before and after a heat session.
And remember – everyone is different! Whatever facilities or treatments you opt for, make sure you feel comfortable. If you’re having a massage which is too firm for you just say, if you can’t take the heat of the sauna for more than a few minutes then leave – you don’t have to keep up with what other people are doing if it’s not right for you. Do what makes you feel good – you’re at the sauna to relax!
