It’s important to first understand why rest periods are so important to your fitness routine. If you’re in the gym giving it 110%, you need to give your muscles time off to recover. During this recovery period your muscles will repair the damage caused from your workouts and build themselves up to be bigger and stronger than before. If you skip these rest periods, your muscles will never have the chance to grow and develop and you’ll risk causing yourself a serious injury.
So what are the signs you need to look out for if you think you’ve overworked yourself?
- Slow recovery and recurring aches and pains
- Regular injuries from exercise
- Disrupted sleeping patterns
- Fluctuations in resting heart rate and blood pressure
If you notice these signs it’s time to take a break from the gym. Taking time away will help your body regain its strength so you can return to the gym and achieve what you set out to do.
When you return to the gym, it’s important to prevent yourself from overtraining in the future. Keep rest and recovery periods regular, ideally two or three times a week. You could also keep your routine interesting by changing it on a regular basis.
There are a number of ways you can give yourself a break of rest days. You could take part in less intense activities if you like to keep moving, such a swimming and yoga. Alternatively you could give your body a true recovery day with a few hours in a spa.
