Getting a good night’s sleep is more important than you might think as you can benefit in a number of ways from fitting in your regular eight hours.

Sleeping well every night will help you reduces stress and improve your motivation levels. It’s no secret that if you’re lacking sleep, you are much more prone to bad moods and feeling the effects of stress. Everyone is different so the amount of sleep you’ll need will be personal to you, however the average amount of sleep needed tends to range between six to nine hours per night. Try to avoid hitting the sack after midnight, as it’s been suggested that your body and vital organs perform important functions in the small hours of the night and they will be much more efficient if you’re asleep during this time. Also, as tempting as it may be, don’t be tempted by long lie-ins when you have a day off. This will only push your sleeping routine out of sync and you’ll pay for it later when you try to get back into it!

A good night’s sleep can also improve your immune system. Those who lack sleep are more likely to suffer with ill health. This is due the fact that during the time we are awake the body’s cells are working hard to keep you awake, so they can’t focus on protecting you from germs – there’s a reason why sleep is always recommended when you fall ill with any cold or virus.

You also stand a better chance of gaining control your weight when you have a set sleeping routine. People who sleep poorly are more likely to lack motivation, which can cause them to shy away from taking on any form of regular exercise.  An unmotivated person may also struggle to cook healthy meals on a daily basis, and may end up instead eating more ready meals, takeaways and junk food. These unhealthy habits can cause people to gain weight and put themselves at risk of other health issues.

Getting into a good sleeping routine doesn’t always happen overnight and may take more time and patience for some – but be persistent. If you struggle, there are few things you can try. Get your body used to going to bed and getting up at set times every day. An hour or so before going to bed, start to switch off from everything and start letting your mind wind down from the day – Twitter can wait until the morning! Another change that can help is to avoid having decaffeinated drinks in the evening. You could also take up some form of exercise – just 30 minutes a day will make a big difference and help you use up any excess energy.

The sauna can also help to improve sleeping patterns, as it provides the perfect environment for your mind to relax and let go of daily stresses. If you can work in a regular visit and make use of a sauna, a steam room and even a spa bath a few times a month you could see a noticeable change in your sleeping habits.
